It’s funny how many people have wished me a “Merry Christmas.” I even heard someone say, “There’s nothing wrong with saying ‘Merry Christmas.’” (And there isn’t.) I happen to say ‘Happy Holidays’ myself, but I don’t mind when someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. Why do we get so uptight about it?
A non-Jewish friend of mine responded recently, “I’m Jewish,” when wished a Merry Christmas. Being non-religious myself, I don’t worry too much about the terms.
Christmas seems more like a capitalist holiday in the U.S. than anything. I was in Chicago listening to Christmas music at Macy’s in October. The not-so-subtle subliminal song of ‘spend money’ broke my concentration as I was trying to figure out my Halloween costume.
But I am no digressing Scrooge…
I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kickin’ Kwanzaa, Happy New Year, Festivus for the Restuvus or whatever holiday you, your wallet and your family happen to celebrate.
Sorry if I missed any. Feel free to let me know or spread the holiday cheer by contacting me on Twitter at @mccambridge.
